A Wabanaki Meadow

The splash of blue oil on canvas

serves as the sky under which

rolling hills of blueberries unfold

like the flutter of a clean sheet

across undulating topography

just past the Penobscot Narrows

bridge where in the fall the green

leaves of summer erupt into waves

of crimson running down the

geometric slope as scarlet flowing

into deep burgundy with a tide of

brilliant vermillion red flashing

orange-tinged flames that shift

and float in the afternoon light

both wild and delicate at once

the slow burn of autumn’s last

flourish before the cold hush

of winter settles over the land
